Music education across the Goulburn electorate including the Southern Highlands, Yass Valley, and Upper Lachlan shires has received a welcome boost, with the Hume Conservatorium of Music securing $41,473 through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program.
The funding will enable the purchase a vehicle, allowing Hume Conservatorium to deliver programs to regional and remote schools more effectively and at a lower cost. Until now, schools have been covering travel costs for teachers using private vehicles at ATO rates.
The new vehicle is expected to halve these transport costs for participating schools, ensuring resources are directed where they are needed most – into music learning opportunities for students.
Executive Director of Hume Conservatorium, Mr George Brenan, said the project will reduce the barriers to access for young people in rural and regional communities:
“Music education is not just about learning an instrument – it enhances physical coordination, cognitive development, and builds confidence. This funding will help us to nurture the next generation of musicians. As we acquire extra vehicles, the benefits across our region will only increase,” Mr Brenan said.
Member for Goulburn, Wendy Tuckerman MP, welcomed the announcement, noting the positive impact for local schools:
“Hume Conservatorium has a long and proud history of enriching our communities through music. By reducing costs and increasing access, this project ensures that students in even the most remote parts of our region won’t miss out on the chance to learn, grow, and be inspired by music education,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
The Community Building Partnership Program is an annual NSW Government initiative that funds infrastructure projects to support community groups, enhance facilities, and strengthen local connections.
