SENIORS IN HIGHLANDS GET SOCIAL

The social calendar in the Goulburn electorate just got busier with the NSW Seniors Festival Grants Program providing opportunities for local seniors to get active and stay connected.

Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said Wingecarribee Shire Council and The Robertson Shed Inc. combined have successfully acquired $7000 towards their Seniors Festival Programs.

“This grant is an opportunity for older people in our area to get out into the community and be social, happy and active,” Mrs Tuckerman said.

“Seniors in our region lead the way as role models, carers and volunteers. We want to see them continue to be active participants and valued for their contributions.

Almost 80 projects were selected across the state, adding to a diverse schedule of activities including social dances, educational workshops and health programs.

Wingecarribee Shire Council was awarded $6,100 to deliver an exciting and engaging program of activities and events across the whole of Seniors Festival 2021. The aim is to provide a stimulating and engaging calendar of events that appeals to a broad range of both active and less active seniors in our community. The program will address the 5 Ways to Wellbeing – Connect, Give, Keep Learning, Be Active and Take Notice.

The Robertson Shed Incorporated was awarded $940 to deliver A Journey into Gundungurra Culture Workshop to host Gundungurra elder, Aunty Trish Levett who will take participants on a journey through Gundungurra culture. The workshop will introduce participants to local Aboriginal culture and provide an opportunity for informal discussion, to promote greater understanding and to make connections. It will also include a creative activity.

“Congratulations to the creative minds in our community, whose ideas stood out among hundreds of quality applications applications to deliver exciting activities for our seniors,” Mrs Tuckerman said.

The grants program had three categories covering small, community-run activities with grants up to $1,000, to large-scale programs with grants of up to $10,000. Successful recipients will hold local programs and activities during the NSW Seniors Festival, which runs 13-24 April 2021.
